This lecture comes out of my book THE WELCOMING GARDEN (Gibbs Smith Publishing, Salt Lake City, UT; January, 2006). Gardeners across North America are rethinking the time-worn notion of foundation planting and how they can create an engaging beautiful garden at the front of their houses. Using about 50 pairs of slides taken by professional garden photographers from across America and Canada, Gordon Hayward shows helps you see how to develop a welcoming front garden. His premise is that everyone has a different level of comfort when it comes to separating house from sidewalk or street, so he explores the full range of options from leaving a great deal of lawn to leaving no lawn; from leaving a full view of the house from the street to completely concealing the house within a densely planted front garden. Somewhere in this lecture participants will find the right balance for them between neighborliness and privacy.
