In August, 1999, plantswoman Gail Gee, my wife Mary and I sat down at Gail’s kitchen table in a Maryland suburb of Washington, DC to design the layout for her three acre garden. Over two days we developed the garden’s framework – its paths, bed shapes and an allee. A year later we met again for revisions. Over the last ten years, Gail has chosen plants for and planted this remarkable three acre garden herself.
